About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:

Born in 1913, Peter Biegel was one of the finest sporting artists of his generation. After completing his education, he became a pupil of Lucy Kemp-Welch at her school of animal painting until the outbreak of the Second World War.

However, Peter Biegel took much inspiration for his painting from the great sporting artist, Lionel Edwards. He became the only pupil that Lionel Edwards had and, on leaving Lucy Kemp-Welch’s school, joined him after his studies at Bournemouth School of Art, England. He came to study with Lionel Edwards, after they met by accident on a train journey.

He went on to hold one man exhibitions at leading galleries in London. His work became widely known through several extremely successful Christmas card designs for the Injured Jockeys Fund in the 1960s, one of which illustrates four great steeplechasers, ‘Pas Seul’, ‘Arkle’, ‘Mill House’ and ‘King’s Nephew’ which sold over 85,000 copies in 1964.

Peter Biegel’s sporting and equestrian work includes images of point-to-points, steeplechasing, flat racing, showjumping and hunting scenes. One of his most famous works includes a portrait of Pat Smythe riding a horse over a waterjump at Hickstead.

He died in 1988.
