About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:

Several members of the Seutter family were prominent German cartographers of the first half of the 18th century.

The patriarch of the clan was Georg Matthäus Seutter the Older, who lived between 1678 and 1756; he served an apprenticeship to the Nuremberg map publisher J B Homann but then established his own successful publishing business in Augsburg, where he became Geographer to the Imperial Court.

His son Albrecht Carl Seutter assisted him in his work with his son-in-law, Conrad Lotter, and the three cartographers issued a large series of town plans in 1741, with the title Atlas Novus Sive Tabulae Geographicae Totius Orbis. Prior to that date Seutter had already published a number of significant atlases in a variety of formats.

Georg Matthäus Seutter the Older was succeeded in his business by his son of exactly the same name (1729 – 1760).
