About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:

Born in 1844, Thomas Eakins was an American realist painter. From the ages of 18 to 22, Eakins trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He often attended anatomy lectures to develop his understanding of the human body and thus improve his drawing skills.

Eakins undertook further study in Paris and travelled to Spain, before returning to his home country and childhood residence. He painted in both oil and watercolour, depicting his friends and family as well as muses.

In 1876, he began teaching at the Pennsylvania Academy. Eakins possessed a calm acceptance of importance of the nude within art, reflective of his time in Europe. Victorian America did not yet share this approach, and his teaching methods were met with conflict.

Eakins continued to paint into retirement, working on life-size portraits.
