About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:

Born in 1761, Louis Leopold Boilly was a French painter known for depicting genre scenes. Naturally gifted, Boilly’s technique is almost faultless. His skill for painting in a highly realistic and romantic style is evident in his earliest works.

Until his mid-twenties, Boilly painted portraits for a living. In 1785, he moved to Paris, where he began to paint detailed scenes of French high society. Exhibiting in the Salons, he gradually gained recognition and success.

In addition to painting, Boilly was an early pioneer of lithography. It is thought that he produced around 500 genre artworks over his career, and over 5,000 smaller portraits.
