About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:

Frederick Carl Frieseke was an American Impressionist painter who spent most of his life as an ex patriot in France. He was an influential member of the Giverny Art Colony and he is especially known for painting female subjects both indoors and out.

He was trained at the Art Institute of Chicago and then moved to New York and became a member of the Art Students League before moving to France, where he spent most of the rest of his life.

He exhibited extensively in France and although he lived next door to Monet, he was neither a friend nor was influenced by his work and, perhaps, Renoir was more important in his life, in terms of influence.

He had 17 paintings exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1909 and he felt that he was more free of the puritanical restrictions which he felt in America and enjoyed the freedom of painting the nude out of doors.
