About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:

Born in 1848 in Paris, Gustave Caillebotte was an influential French painter. Prior to pursuing art, Caillebotte studied law and engineering. After fighting in the Franco-Prussian War, he changed direction and retrained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. It was here that he made valuable friendships, including Edgar Degas and Auguste Renoir.

His paintings were Impressionist in style and depicted everyday Parisian life. He exhibited until the late 1870s. In addition to painting himself, Caillebotte was an avid art collector. Interested in many movements, he built an impressive collection of Impressionist, Fauvist and Symbolist work.

Today, Caillebotte's work can be found in major museums and galleries across the world, including New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Musee d’Orsay in Paris holds over 40 of his works.
