About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:

The London-born son of a Danish artisan and an Aberdonian mother, Clausen was apprenticed at 14 to the interior decorator George Trollope & Sons, later winning a scholarship to the Government Schools at South Kensington. He then worked in the studio of Edwin Long of Babylonian Marriage Market fame, who advised him to abroad.

Marriage in 1881 and a move to Childwickbury in Hertfordshire found Clausen surrounded by agricultural depression and rural life was harsh, but it was not all gloom, toil, ‘corns and dirty nails’. In contrast to these more sombre days are Clausen’s depictions of young village girls, created in both oils and pastels, quickly drawn with slashing strokes of acid green, yellow and orange.

Increasing mechanisation, the Boer War and the First World War extinguished scenes of simple life but Clausen, love of the countryside and its inhabitants were ingrained.
