About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:

Frederick Cayley Robinson was born in Brentford upon Thames in 1862 and made a successful living in the Victorian and Edwardian eras as a Symbolist painter and illustrator.

He studied at the St John’s Wood Academy and then, from 1885, at the Royal Academy Schools. To complete his education, he spent three years at the Academy Julian in Paris and he travelled in Europe before finally settling in London, in Holland Park.

His work was exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1895 and he held a Professorship at the Glasgow School of Art in the 1910s and 20s, which encouraged him to spend around three months each year in Scotland.

Cayley Robinson’s work was much influenced by that of his contemporary, Sir Edward Burne Jones, and he generally painted in tempera, or in watercolour, and usually Symbolist in style. His favourite subjects included girls and water scenes, and he also worked as an illustrator, theatre designer and decorator.

Original paintings by Cayley Robinson are held by museums around Europe, including the British Museum and the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge.

Frederick Cayley Robinson died in 1927.
