About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:

Daniel Sherrin, the English landscape and marine painter, was born in 1868 in the north of England. His father, John Sherrin, was a well-known painter of still-life subjects and water-colours.

Daniel Sherrin studied under William Henry Hunt, and soon became established as a prolific and talented landscape painter. However, he rarely exhibited and showed only two paintings at the turn of the century, at the Manchester City Art Gallery. Most of his paintings were sold through commercial galleries and commissions.

He mainly painted scenes of Southern England, especially featuring Surrey, Kent and Hampshire. His works perfectly capture the spirit of the English landscape and he can therefore be considered a fine successor to Constable. However, his landscapes are also very similar in style and technique to those of Benjamin William Leader with whom he has often been compared.

Daniel Sherrin also painted many marine subjects and his work in this area has been compared to that of Thomas Somerscales and Montague Dawson.

He died in 1940.
